WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) are two directives set by the European Union and entwined together with the purpose to decrease waste from electric and electronic products and to encourage recycling as much as possible. The waste (not effected by the directives) should be as safe as possible to handle and minimize hazardous discharge in our surroundings. WEEE was in full effect August 13, 2005 and RoHS started July 1, 2006. From the now banned materials and substances listed in RoHS the metal lead will have forced the most changes. Earlier lead was used in most solderings, but also as a component in many products. Lead-free soldering demands higher solder temperature and not all components are suited for that. That is not only a local, but also a global issue and Furnco is a proud member of the Swedish organisation El-Kretsen. Owned by the Swedish trade and industry with the purpose to collect and recycle electrical and electronic waste. El-Kretsen runs a nationwide collection and recycling program and in their latest report we find: "In 2007, El-Kretsen consolidated its position as one of the leading systems in Europe for the collection of electrical and electronic waste. Quantities have increased from 16 to 17.5 kg per inhabitant. El-Kretsen still has the most costeffective system in the world. The collection target in Europe is 4kg per inhabitant."
